About Us

When I was about 11 years old, my parents bought a house that was built in 1908.  It needed the usual repairs, but we soon learned that under many coats of paint, all the door trim, baseboards, pocket doors, and dining room full of very ornate six-foot-tall paneling, was the most beautiful quarter-sawn white oak.  For any of you who have seen what quarter-sawn white oak looks like, it’s incredible to think that at any time this was standard trim in any home.

Unfortunately, somewhere around the 1950s wood was out and the clean look of freshly painted trim was in.  So, for many years my father and I worked at restoring this house full of oak…  He soon became an expert at using a heat gun to melt and remove at least a dozen coats of paint, and I learned how to use paint remover and do the rest of the job beginning at around age 12.

Sadly, my father passed away at far too young an age, and that had a profound impact on me.  He was going to enjoy his life after he retired and was never able to do so.  I then decided that I wasn’t going to make that mistake, and so I decided to get a job at the local cabinet shop.  I spent a number of years learning the trade, and I got a great deal of satisfaction from the work.

Today, I have this tiny piece of the internet to call my own.  I enjoy writing and researching articles about all kinds of tools, woodworking and otherwise, and it is my great hope that you benefit from your visit.
